We always look forward to your Christmas tree sale. I wish however, you could ask George's Market to clean up their parking lot at the back, get rid of the brush and that flatbed at the south west side corner, that no one seems to know who the owner is..It has wood on it with nails sticking up, rusted frame etc.We see kids playing on it etc. someone is going end up getting hurt. Also the griffti on the back of the store is an eyesore, the grocery owner was suppose to have the Anti-Griffti van out months ago. They should make it so the kids can't get up there in the first place..I feel for the store owner and the neighbors..Not sure who to talk to about these matters.I have talked to them at the store.Love your website with all the pictures and very informative etc..Thanks! Barb

Quick call to 311, which transferred me to Animal Control. I was on with a person within a minute. They offer 2 options:

1 - I check out a live trap from their office and if I catch the cat, they'll come and pick it up. Then the owner would have to go through the hassle of proving the cat is up to par with vaccinations, etc. If not, then they get fined.

2 - They will send a letter to the supposed owner that they have received complaints.

Thanks Andy. I appreciate the ideas.

We just smelled and found more in the yard today. It is time to take action. I just read that crushed red pepper spread around the yard might be a more natural repellant. I also saw some ultrasonic repellant options, but that costs a bit of money.

I think I will call animal control to start with.

Mike,

There are a number of possible recourses you may wish to employ. First, you could simply call animal control about the offending cat and let the city deal with it. I believe I know what cat you are referring to as well, since it does lay outside quite frequently.

Second, you could politely ask your neighbors to please keep their cat inside as it could get hit by a car...no bona fide pet owner wants their pet to die (this could be used to segue into the concern about the feces).

Third, you could simply ask the owners to clean up after their pet. If they insist on leaving it outside, then animal control might get called.

Pick your poison. It's a sticky situation to be sure, but any neighbor that wants to be neighborly will certainly want to not be a nuissance to their other neighbors.

My suggestion would be the first or second option with the third being a last resort (direct confrontation). I believe I, too, have been affected by the offending poo.

WARNING: Check your shoes before you go inside!

Today I was out mowing the lawn and I noticed several piles of cat poo. This has become a rather frequent occurrence lately in my yard, and I doubt that I am alone. They are indeed a stinky nuisance.

I have seen the culprits and they are adorable as can be; however, their feces is not cute in the least. Now, I am 99% sure that I know who these particular cats belong to. I live on Arlington, but I am not going to name any names. Perhaps you have encountered this same problem.

Ideas of revenge have been circulating around our household. We all remember the classic flaming bag of poo on the doorstep, right? There should not be a need to resort to childish pranks, but what can I do? How can we attempt to resolve this in a civil way? Does anyone out there have advice on how to stop cats from disrespecting my yard?

I am scared for the day a curious child comes upon one of these piles of poo.

·	Last year ONA sold 190 trees (bought 200)
·	ONA can save 3% on the total cost this year if the trees are paid for in advance by August 15
·	Between 150-175 trees will be purchased this year depending what the potential profit is
·	ONA will order fewer Scotch Pine this year (that is what was left over last year)
IX.	ONA storage
·	John Nicter and Susan Thompson have been kind enough to store ONA’s supplies
·	The empty lot on Indiana cannot be used as the city will not allow a temporary garage to be used
·	The old insurance building on Violet Court could be used
·	A coalition of surrounding neighborhoods could all use it
·	ARCH could possibly help with attaining grants to fix it up
·	Could be used for parties, etc.
·	Other cities have had much success utilizing district board members in their neighborhoods.
VI.	Property donation
·	ONA may have a property that will be donated to the association.
VIII.	Passenger rail service

I just wanted to say that if you are aware of a nuisance property, call Neighborhood Code. Unfortunately I have had to call numerous times on the property at 3610 Webster, but the staff that works for Neighborhood Code has always been amazing. They are kind, courteous, and care about my concerns. There was one day the above mentioned property's sump pump was spraying water onto my home due to a hole in the plumbing, and was creating an ice rink on my property and down onto the sidewalk. The gentleman from Neighborhood Code responded to my call within an hour.
It still saddens me that for the almost four years that I have lived here that this property has never been cared for, but I continue to call Neighborhood Code in hopes that the owner will get the message that I will not stop complaining.
Again, if we want action taken on these properties, we need to be proactive. Call Neighborhood Code, they will follow through. Someday I hope to have a neighbor that is as proud of their Oakdale home as I am.

Also, the Oakdale neighborhood is within a few blocks of the Taylor campus, you probably already know that, but also very close to grocery stores, great restaurants, plus downtown and several large shopping centers are only about 10 minutes away.

Traffic is calm and it's usually pretty quiet around Taylor. Fort Wayne has qualities that make it seem like a big city and a small town all at once, it's nice.

You and your family sound like a great fit for the Oakdale neighborhood! It's a great place to live and raise a family, plus you get the historic home to boot. As Melissa (millie) mentioned, Taylor is a great neighbor to both ours and the surrounding neigborhoods. I'm sure you'll love it here!

Since I knew that we were moving to Fort Wayne I have been searching through everything and anything Fort Wayne related. I am a huge advocate for the reestablishment community and community relationships so I search for Fort Wayne communities and neighborhood associations.

Millieh, thanks for the links. We actually have seen the house one 1001 Kinsmoor online and hope that we will have the chance to come up to Fort Wayne and see it in person.

We are really hopeful about finding either a place to purchase or rent in the the Oakdale Neighborhood, Harrison Hill or the surrounding 46807 area code.

It's great to hear you will be moving to Fort Wayne, and especially that you are considering choosing Oakdale or a surrounding neighborhood as a place to live. The Taylor campus is beautiful, we are lucky to be their neighbors.

My wife and I are moving to Fort Wayne at the end of July. I am going to be in Graduate school at Taylor University and my wife is going to be working full-time. We have looked around and we really like the neighborhoods and homes just north of Rudisill and we were wondering if there were any homes available in Oakdale (or vicinity if someone knows). Ideally we are looking to purchase, but we would not stray away from looking at rentals. Thanks

Tire day pickup update verbatim:

To participate in the "Neighborhood Tire Program" your neighborhood must pre-register through the Community Development Office. To pre-register, forms must be requested before 5:00 pm on the Monday immediately preceding the tire day.

Pre-registered participants will be paid 75 cents a tire for up to 200 car tires (with or without rims) each month. Each neighborhood can participate as often as it likes as long as it is pre-registered each time it wants to participate. Neighborhoods may not bring tires from business. Tires should be brought to the City of Fort Wayne Maintenance Facility at the Northeast corner of Wallace and Monroe Streets. Enter through the gate on Monroe Street.

This year's program will run April through October with no tire day in July. Once again the program will take place on Saturdays. Tire drop off hours are from 8:45am until 3:00pm. The dates for this year's tire days are:

April 19
May 17
June 21
August 16
September 20
October 18

Contact Bob Woenker at 745-5324 if you have any questions or if you want to register your neighborhood.

It looks like we can organize one for June through October (since the May date is already too late according to the registration rules and we need to set up the logistics of it at our next meeting).

Please let me know who would like to volunteer and we'll see about getting the ball rolling on this.

1. No profanity or swearing in subject lines, signatures or body.
2. No flaming of other members to incite or perpetuate a conflict or argument. ANY personal attacks or name calling will get you banned.
3. No bombing forums or threads with pointless posts.
4. Do not impersonate other individuals or falsely represent yourself.
5. Do not discuss, suggest, engage, or encourage any illegal activity on the forums. Linking to locations that deal with any such activity are also forbidden.
6. Posting under secondary usernames or alias user names other than your main account for the purpose of arguing, degrading or belittling other readers is grounds for having your posting privileges revoked.
7. You must have a valid e-mail account in your profile so you can be reached by a forum moderator or administrator.
8. It's ok to agree to disagree.

These are here to help you (and others) have an enjoyable experience here.
[*]Respect both forum moderators and administrators. It is a thankless, unpaid job that we do, and cleaning up other people's messes is never fun.
[*]No SHOUTING. Don't use all caps when posting. It is difficult to read and annoying.
[*]Try to post to the forum that is most appropriate for the topic being presented.
[*]No cross-posting.
[*]Refrain from using profanity or creative spelling to get around the censor filters.
[*]Respect the privacy of other members and individuals. Do not post personal information about them (i.e. addresses, phone numbers, passwords, etc.) without their consent.

Moderators and administrators frequently review forum messages for those that are in violation of these rules. Any messages found to be in violation may be deleted without warning or explanation.

There are going to be topics and discussions that will have heated debates. Please think before you post and re-read what you type before you post it. Keep your comments limited to the debate at hand and not make this a personal issue between you and another reader. There is tremendous diversity in age, race, gender, and more here. There will be a lot of varying opinions on different subjects. We're all human beings and we're all drawn to this site because we have a common bond as ONA members.

The locations of the dirt does suggest that the east side of the association was and is being neglected. Even if it was NOT done on purpose, it still perceived LIKE bias and laziness toward the west side and THAT is my point.

My reply:

If being biased is attending meetings that votes are made in (the only way for members to truly have their say) then I suppose we are biased. There was a quorum on the matter of the dirt location. I do not see how this could be perceived as bias personally. All attending residents were asked for their ideas and were asked to volunteer locations...alas this has already been covered. In regards to your perception of the officers being lazy (that is what I inferred from your remarks, if I am incorrect, please let me know), to the best of my knowledge, there has not been any sort of formal training given to any of us, nor has there been any sort of mentoring given by past officers to aid us in our responsibilities.

And to answer the attempts of suggesting that I should attend meetings to bring up my thoughts or to make them credible. The last time I looked at the by-laws, there is no requirement to attend the monthly meetings. Is there? If there is, I would be happy to do so. This site and forum was created for input and I gave it. By having this forum, you are in fact valuing it as a common area and one that welcomes thoughts and ideas that are just as valid and equal as if someone brought them up in a meeting.

My reply:

While there are no requirements in the by-laws to attend meetings, it certainly would make your thoughts credible at the moment of discussion instead of after the fact. You cannot vote if you do not attend the meetings. While your thoughts are just as valid here as they would be at a meeting, they do not change what has already come to pass. My invitation was indeed genuine and I will reextend it. You DO have much experience that the new officers do not. We could all benefit from your input in person and perhaps even mentoring. I know that I am still learning the ropes in regards to rubbing elbows with members of the city government and the like.

In regards to this being a common forum, it is true, but all members of the forum will be expected to play nice. No flame wars will be tolerated. I will be doing a write up on the rules of the forum later on today.

Have a great day!

In situations like this, the comments being made are too late to make any difference for this year, all that can happen now is that it won't take place the same way next year. A plan was made, voted on and executed. This happened because it was what was thought to be the wishes of the neighborhood by what took place at the meeting. That is why meetings are important, if you really want to voice your opinion you can prevent something that you don't want to happen right then and there! Every single resident has the opportunity to "have a say" if they want said say!

At the meetings there are always neighbors from both the "eastside" and the "westside" so how can that be considered biased? It is a shame that anyone would think that the neighborhood as a whole isn't being considered when decisions are being made. In the end "sides" are represnted by who attends the meetings, it isn't really the officer's or anyone's fault if no one shows up to represent all of the sides. Or, if all sides agree and vote yay to a plan. I guess I've never seen it as sides before now, I thought everything west of Calhoun was west and that we were all just in ONA.

There is an election at the next meeting and people from all sides are very, very welcome to run for any officer position, all are open for nominees. Wouldn't it be cool if an ONA election actually had more than one nominee for each position and that we really actually voted? There could be different parties and everything, maybe we could put signs in our yards for who we support!

I think the forum is a terrific idea and open to all opinions. I do feel, though, that being at meetings...which is strictly up to the individual...gives more insight and information for decisions and action and thus opinions. Many, many people of our 130 or so paid members do not come to the meetings. Of course, most of them do not use the forum.

Getting along as neighbors certainly means on-line,too.

I would hope that we can dialogue with respect on this site. We won't always understand or agree with decisions made by the org. or by individuals, but I would hope that if members have questions or concerns, that said concerns would be voiced in respectful and considerate verbage. Those who criticize and don't attend meetings where strategies for a project are considered and debated and plans are made, then those people don't have all of the info as to why certain decisions are made. Do complainers understand that planners of the org are intelligent enough to make plans for plants in the beds? For heavens sake we are gardeners! Also, in regard to the complaints as to how residents get the dirt: We begged for people to donate their driveways to dump the dirt. Did we receive any volunteers? Nope. So we had to put it where we could. Last year we had two volunteers, one east, and one west, who agreed to put piles in their drives. Were we lazy, blantly biased and disrespectulful last year to have two venues, one east and west? No matter where we put it, there are going to be many hundreds of ONA residents who will have to scratch their heads and question: "Cool, I have access to dirt but my house is a long way from the pile... how can I get dirt to my house?" No matter where we put dirt, it will not be convenient to the vast majority of home owners. So does that make us lazy thinkers and blantly biased to hundreds of home owners? So many ONA volunteers work countless hours to try to help residents. What will continue to motivate leadership and volunteers: mordant invective on the part of residents who aren't armed with the most current info and who don't feel appreciation for those who try to help, or those who have concerns but can address them respectfully and considerately to the leadership and volunteers?
